In the beginning of the year Aparan will have its own solar stations

Freenergy Company has already started the construction of 20 kW and 10 kW solar photovoltaic energy systems in Aparan․

According to the solar maps of Armenia, Aparan has a sufficient resource. The number of sunny days here is about 290, which is an essential guarantee for efficiency. The community-based, autonomous solar energy production system being built in the Aparan community will operate in parallel with the electricity grid of Armenia and will provide significant electricity savings for the community. Energy costs will be reduced by about 30%.

In parallel with the implementation of the project, the “Energy Saving Foundation” responsible for the project, also carried out awareness measures in the participant community. As people in remote areas of the capital are not sufficiently informed about modern energy efficiency, solar technologies, and the possibilities of acquiring them, these information campaigns aim to raise awareness of existing programs in the community, to make innovative solutions applicable.

According to Tamara Babayan, the Program Director of the “European Union for Sustainable Energy in Armenia”, the program consists of two components: construction of solar power plants in the cities of Aparan and Artik. The construction of stations has already launched in Aparan. According to the second component of the program, it’s planned to build a systemic solar photovoltaic station in Artik to sell the generated electricity to the electricity network. The “public-private” partnership approach will be tested for the construction of the Artik solar station. The station will be from 600 kW to 1MW. The Artik program is still in the stage of project discussions.

As a result of the implementation of the renewable energy promotion program in Aparan and Artik cities, a special financing mechanism will be created. A COMO fund will be formed serving the purposes of the Covenant of Mayors, where the received savings and further income will be accumulated. The fund will finance other energy-saving and renewable energy measures of the community through a circulating mechanism. In other words, the city authorities will have a new source of income – the sun.
